One of the unfortunate consequences of unfettered Big Ten expansion is the schedule. Even though Michigan and Purdue have been in the Big Ten for over a century it doesn’t feel that way in football. When the Boilers head to Ann Arbor on November 4th it will be the first time since October 29th, 2011 they have visited the Big House. That was Nebraska’s first season in the Big Ten, and Purdue has since hired three different coaches.
It is not like the Wolverines have been a regular visitor to West Lafayette in that time, either. They only came to Purdue in 2012 and 2017, and if not for last season’s Big Ten championship game those would be the only meetings in a decade. To be fair, Purdue was originally scheduled to go to Ann Arbor in 2020, but in the last decade Purdue has played Notre Dame, Indiana State, Cincinnati, Nevada, Missouri, Eastern Michigan, and Marshall in the regular season more often than Michigan, a team from its own conference.
Arguably, this is Purdue’s toughest game of the 2023 season. The Wolverines have won two consecutive conference titles and Purdue has just one win in Ann Arbor in the last half century.
