Isaiah Thompson may miss the entire summer

More ($): Isaiah Thompson on injury

FORT WAYNE — Purdue's lone 2019 commitment to this point, Isaiah Thompson, may remain idled longer than was first hoped after suffering a broken bone in his left ankle weeks ago.

Thompson said that MRI results returned this week showing a torn anterior talofibular ligament, too, an injury that may — or maybe is likely to — require surgery.

"They say I'm leaning toward surgery," Thompson said Friday night, after he sat on the bench for his Indy Heat team's opener at the Hensley Memorial Run 'N Slam in Fort Wayne. "If I have surgery, that would put me out for the summer. If I don't get surgery, then I might be able to come back in July, but it won't be the same."

Surgery would mean Thompson would miss his final summer of grassroots basketball — including the high-profile Peach Jam, which Indy Heat is well on its way to qualifying for — as well as next month's Indiana Junior All-Star events.

"If I get surgery, I'll be back for the high school season," said Thompson, who plays for Zionsville High School. "They said that after surgery, it would probably be six to eight weeks of therapy and then I could start doing basketball stuff."

Thompson said he'll have a follow-up appointment with doctors to finalize the decision whether or not to move forward with surgery.

"I want to come back, so it's disappointing," Thompson said, "but at the same time, if I get surgery, they said the ligament will be repaired 100-percent and if I don't get surgery, I might be more prone to injury.

"Surgery might be the best option, but we'll just see."

Thompson's injury has been part of a modest rash of injuries around the state of Indiana this spring.

New Castle forward and Purdue target Mason Gillis is sidelined currently after undergoing knee surgery last week. He could be back for July.

Culver Academy Class of 2020 Trey Galloway is sitting out the Run 'N Slam this weekend and perhaps beyond due to a hamstring injury and Gillis' grassroots teammate with Indiana Elite's 2019 team, guard Alex Hemenway, is out for a few weeks after breaking his nose.
