Mason Gillis has been a starter for much of his career, but as Purdue moved into the 2023-24 season the fifth year senior was moved to the bench. He still played more than 20 minutes per game and often finished games, but Trey Kaufman-Renn would be the starter in his place.
His hard work was rewarded on Tuesday as he was named the Big Ten's 6th Man of the Year.
Gillis is averaging a career best 7.0 points and 3.8 rebounds per game this season, but he is third on the team in made three-pointers while shooting a team best 49% from long range. He has also been solid at the free throw line at a team best 84.6%. His defense and toughness also are important elements he brings to the floor.
Gillis was also an honorable mention all-Big Ten selection.
