To fill the vacancy on his coaching staff, Matt Painter's convinced Micah Shrewsberry to return to the Purdue bench, drawing from both the NBA ranks and the Boilermaker program's own past.

An assistant coach on Brad Stevens' Boston Celtics' staff the past five seasons, Shrewsberry was part of Painter's staff at Purdue from 2011-13 before following Stevens to the NBA. With the Celtics’ season ending Wednesday night, he will now rejoin the Boilermaker staff, GoldandBlack.com has learned. Shrewsberry will carry the title of associate head coach.

Before coaching at Purdue, Shrewsberry was a key member of Stevens' staff at Butler from 2008-2011, helping the Bulldogs to a pair of national title game appearances.

The 42-year-old Indianapolis native and Cathedral alumnus has been a candidate for several college head coaching jobs in recent years, including Southern Illinois, UMass and others.

He'll replace Greg Gary, who left Purdue after eight seasons to become the new head coach at Mercer.

Gary was heavily involved in the orchestration of the Boilermaker offense, a role that will be passed on to Shrewsberry, an area of the game in which Painter is known to hold Shrewsberry in high regard.

The hire could be made official before the end of the week.

Shrewsberry will join returning assistant coaches Steve Lutz and Brandon Brantley on Painter’s staff.
