FISHERS — As soon as Steve Lutz joined Purdue's staff, Keyshawn Embery came on its radar.

Lutz, who replaced Jack Owens on Matt Painter's staff after Owens became head coach at Miami (Ohio), had been recruiting Embery for Creighton.

"I had a great relationship with him," Embery said Saturday at the Under Armour Association event in Fishers.

Painter's on board with Embery now, too.

"Coach Lutz was already looking at me at Creighton and they loved my game," Embery said. "Coach Painter said he loves how I play too. That's a great program over there."

The well-put-together combo guard from Midwest City, Okla., says he hopes to unofficially visit Purdue this summer, then figures he'll take one of his official visits in the fall to West Lafayette, too.

"Of course," Embery said, "of course they're going to be in that top group."

Painter, Embery said, was drawn in part to his ability to "play at both ends of the floor," since he's an effective slasher on offense, in particular, and a potentially formidable defender with the considerable high and length he brings to the position.

Rivals.com's No. 108th-ranked player in the 2018 class listed Purdue along with offers from Creighton, Houston, Tulsa, Nebraska, UNLV and Kansas State.

"I'm just still trying to get a feel for all the schools recruiting me," he said, "and building relationships with all the coaches and figuring where I want my home to be."

Embery said he expects to play point guard at the next level.

"But it's wherever my coach needs me to play so that I can come in and contribute," Embery said.
