Months after agreeing in the spring to a landmark eight-year contract to remain as his alma mater's men's basketball coach, Purdue coach Matt Painter's deal is officially in place.
The new contract is effective retroactive to July 1, 2011, and runs through June 30, 2019.
According to copy of the new contract acquired by way of an open records request, the contract was signed by Painter and athletic director Morgan Burke on Dec. 13 and approved by university president France A. Cordova a week later.
The terms of the new contract have been in place since Painter's agreement in the spring, coming amidst his talks with the University of Missouri.
The new deal has guaranteed Painter yearly income totaling more than $2 million, much of it coming as incentives from past contracts being converted to guaranteed income.
But with the new deal also came increases in salary for his staff.
Upon being bumped up to the title of associate head coach this spring, Jack Owens' salary moved to $185,000, up from $131,950 last season. Paul Lusk, previously associate coach prior to his move to Missouri State, made $162,400 last season.
First-year assistants Micah Shrewsberry and Greg Gary are each making $160,000, according to their contracts, plus incentive opportunities based on Big Ten finishes and NCAA Tournament success.
Last season, first-year assistant Mike Jackson made $100,000.
Elliot Bloom, the program's supervisor of basketball operations, received a pay increase of more than $12,000.
At the time of Painter's discussions with Missouri, his contract had reached a point to where he'd be responsible for no buy-out charge should he have decided to leave.
The new contract calls for a declining cost of departure.
Before July 1 of 2013, Painter's buy-out would be $1.5 million. After that date and through June 30 of 2015, that number drops to $1 million. From July 1, 2015, to June 30 of 2017, it's $750,000 and from July 1, 2017, to the end of the contract, the figure is a half-million dollars.
