Indiana standouts Brittany Rayburn, a 5-foot-11 guard from Attica, and Alex Guyton, a 6-3 forward from Bloomington North, along with 6-4 center Chelsea Jones of Fort Smith, Ark., and Chantel Poston, a 5-10 guard from Milan, Tenn., signed in the 2008 class on Wednesday.
Recruiting expert Dan Olson, the publisher of the Collegiate Girls Basketball Report, ranks the four-man class as the seventh-best in the country.
"They have four kids in the top-100," said Olson, who's spent the last 15 years coaching, recruiting and evaluating women's hoops talent. "You can rest-assured one things going to happen with those four kids: they're not going to stagnate on their ability, they will get better. That's what they do there (at Purdue), they make those kids better players. It's a solid class for them.
"They helped themselves I think at every position."
Following are excerpts from a GoldandBlack.com interview with Olson.
GoldandBlack.com: Undoubtedly, the marquee player is Rayburn, right?
Olson: "Yeah, she is. I have her ranked No. 16 overall in the country, among all positions. She gives the team, obviously, a good player at her position with good size. I mean she's damn near 6-foot tall, but wow what a nice stroke on the ball. She can shoot it really well. She's an offensively skilled guard and one of those typical fundamental Indiana kids that play basketball the way it's supposed to be played."
GoldandBlack.com: Is she in that same mold as Stephanie White, Katie Douglas and Katie Gearlds?
Olson: "Absolutely."
GoldandBlack.com: What do you think of Guyton, who you've got as the 37th-best player in the country? To me, it seems she's an athletic post who's better defensively than offensively right now.
Olson: "I love her, a good-sized, athletic, post player. She's one of the nation's top-50 players. … She defends the low post. She's mobile and up-tempo. Her impact offensively will be more in transition than in the half-court game right now, but I'm sure that will change as time goes on there at Purdue, because they do a heck of a job.
"Alex is long-armed. She probably plays taller than she is. A very good player, I thought one of the more athletic kids at that size that there is in the nation. When I watched her play, I thought she produced quite well. Her best basketball is going to be ahead of her, no question about it."
GoldandBlack.com: Jones, who you have ranked No. 56 in the class, has been described as a true center. Is that accurate?
Olson: "Yeah, Chelsea's a back-to-basket center, a strong academic kid. I know that was one of the things that really stuck out for me. I remember her when I watched her as a sophomore; I had her she was a really good student. Furthermore, I think that she's much like Guyton, I think her best basketball is ahead of her.
"From an offensive standpoint, she's going to continue to develop. She rebounds it. She's got a pretty fundamental low-post game, and she's got the size frame that will be able to put on some strength that will be allow her to bang in a pretty physical league."
GoldandBlack.com: What about Poston? She was sort of a surprise when she verballed to Purdue.
Olson: "Poston I call, probably, one of the most athletic players in the country. She is really explosive. She's only been playing basketball a short time and kind of just blew up on the national scene in the spring and summer. I saw her play about a year ago. She could shoot it a little bit, but she's so quick and athletic off her feet.
"She was like a sponge, she just got better and better and better. So I think she had a very good summer and that was one of the things that prompted Purdue to really step it up in the recruiting process. She may be one of the more underestimated players in the country. On her athleticism and upside alone I rated her in the top-100. I had her No. 99 overall."
