Purdue held its fourth practice of training camp on Monday morning, the first closed to the public and media.

Following are Jeff Brohm's thoughts:

• As expected, Purdue has lost reserve safety C.J. Parker, likely for the season, with a torn ACL in his left knee.

The senior was hurt in a collision during Thursday's practice, the first of training camp.

Others might be closer to returning, most importantly center Kirk Barron. The junior pulled a hamstring during walk-throughs on Thursday, made it about halfway through the first day, then missed the last three practices. He could be back as soon as Tuesday.

"I think he's feeling good," Brohm said.

Graduate transfer Shane Evans has been taking first-team snaps in Barron's absence.

• Purdue's not yet seeing any separation among its receivers, Brohm said.

That's exacerbated by a couple minor injuries: Jarrett Burgess and Malcolm Dotson missed Saturday with muscle pulls.

But others, it seems, aren't taking advantage of opportunities.

"I see a bunch of guys all about the same," Brohm said. "Maybe in the next week or two a few will stand out. While the guys we had on the team, especially Greg Phillips and Anthony (Mahoungou) and (Jackson) Anthrop, (who) have made progress — it's been visible — they still need to stand out more and not allow the others to catch up. Right now, it's hit or miss at times."

During the periods of camp that were open — Thursday through Saturday — some of the newcomers stood out at times, but not enough.

"While I think we have more bodies, I still need to see guys make contested catches, find a way to get open, a way to make big plays," Brohm said. "We still have a ways to go there."

• Purdue expects to get final grades on the July summer session on Wednesday, a critical point for at least a couple Boilermakers.

"There's some people we're waiting to hear on," Brohm said.
