Quick Count: Purdue training camp, Practice No. 6

Purdue had its second full-pad practice of training camp Wednesday. Following are Jeff Brohm's thoughts:

• The first-year coach called Wednesday Purdue's "most productive day on offense as far as making plays."

Mainly, it seems, Purdue hit balls down the field with more frequency, a big part of the offense but one that had been inconsistent — or missing — to start camp.

"There were some guys who made some plays up the field, which was very encouraging," Brohm said. "We shuffled some things around on the depth chart, as far as giving guys ample opportunities with the first unit and that's bringing out more competition."

Brohm mentioned veterans Anthony Mahoungou — "he's been very consistent" — and Greg Phillips, along with freshmen D'J Edwards and Tyler Hamilton as the day's biggest play-makers.

"There were more plays being made today, which is very encouraging," Brohm said. "Our receivers just have to continue to work and battle through it. We've got to find ways to protect longer and throw it up the field and do some different things in order to give themselves a chance. But I do like the way they competed and came out today and got better."

Brohm mentioned offensive line and receivers as positions were Purdue is mixing personnel, giving reserves opportunities on the first unit.

Shane Evans is getting repetitions at guard as Purdue looks to solidify its offensive line.

The grad transfer had been playing exclusively at center through the first handful of practices, filling in for the then-injured Kirk Barron (hamstring). But Barron, the presumed starter at center, was back on Tuesday, allowing Evans to shift to guard, where the Boilermakers could use a boost.

"Today, we looked at, 'How do we get our best five guys on the line of scrimmage?'" Brohm said. "Shane played some center and guard, which I think he can do both."

• Purdue held its second full-pads practice Wednesday, providing a chance for the Boilermakers to go live for a couple periods, Brohm said.

"To this point, we've done a decent job of sprinting to the ball and getting guys on the ground," he said. "You can always work more at it and we'll continue to do that, but to this point it's been fairly consistent."

• Receivers Corey Holmes, Jarrett Burgess, Malcolm Dotson and Terry Wright, a newcomer to the list, are sitting with injuries.
