Purdue has landed its second verbal commitment for 2017, as East Coast wing Aaron Wheeler has committed to the Boilermakers following a weekend official visit, GoldandBlack.com has learned.

"It went really well," Wheeler said of his official visit, prior to his commitment. "Me and my parents, we loved it, everything about it. We liked the campus and obviously they have great academics, which is a huge key for me and parents. In case things don't work out with basketball, I'd still be able to graduate with a great degree from Purdue and be successful after college.

"And from a basketball perspective, they're a top-10 team and the coaches were telling me and I can come and the coaches were telling me I'll have an opportunity to compete for playing time right away, and that's also big."

The 6-foot-7ish wing attends Brewster Academy in New Hampshire, where he's seen his recruiting take off this fall as a parade of college coaches have come through and seen the Connecticut native.

Wheeler said prior to committing that he planned to take an official visit to Pittsburgh before deciding.

He held offers from Pitt, Providence, St. Joe's, Temple, LaSalle, Charlotte, Florida International, Florida-Gulf Coast, Richmond, Rhode Island and Duquesne, among others. Creighton, Arkansas, Michigan, Northwestern and Virginia were among the many who were involved with him, also.

Wheeler joins big man Matt Haarms as Purdue's two 2017 commitments.

"It was a great fit all around," Wheeler said of Purdue, prior to committing. "It's a great school, and also a great basketball program, top-10 nationally. You're going to play great competition every night. I just think it's a great fit."
