Damezi Anderson eyeing post-July decision
More ($): Purdue recruiting news from Friday in Augusta and Spartanburg
NORTH AUGUSTA, S.C. — Damezi Anderson's recruitment, for all intents and purposes, didn't begin until March, when Purdue issued the South Bend scorer his first high-major offer.
Though a bunch of others have since come in, that recruitment may already be nearing its end.
Anderson reitered at the Peach Jam Friday that he's planning to decide soon after July's end. He did leave the door open to the possibility of taking additional visits, but does seem zeroed in on making a decision sooner rather than later, relatively speaking.
"It's no particular reason," Anderson said. "I'm just trying to get it over with."
The 6-foot-7, 210-or-so-pound Rivals.com four-star wing from South Bend Riley will almost certainly choose from his list major-conference offers.
"Purdue, Michigan, IU, DePaul and UConn," he said.
Purdue seriously recruited Anderson long before any other power-conference program, scouting him off-campus and hosting him for visits many times before it ultimately offered during the NCAA Tournament this past spring.
That long-standing connection has mattered to Anderson, he's said many times before.
"That does matter because it shows Coach (Matt) Painter sees something in me," Anderson recently told TheWolverine.com. “I really respect him and have looked into that school more than any other school."
In the spring, Anderson admitted he considered committing to the Boilermakers immediately after receiving the offer.
But since, a flurry of offers came in during the spring, followed by this summer's offers from Michigan and Indiana, each of which have seemingly given him much to think about.
"Michigan loves shooters and they think I'd fit great in their system," Anderson said, "because they have a four-out kind of game and I think I'd fit in there well."
IU offered just prior to July after Anderson made an unofficial visit to Bloomington.
"They've talked working hard this summer and taking no days off," he said. "I'm an Indiana kid and they think it would be good if I went to Indiana. Archie Miller is a great coach and a cool guy."
Anderson often uses the word "system" when discussing his potential destinations.
Of Purdue's, he said, "They've got good post players but they're always looking to kick and have good shooters ready to shoot the ball."
Anderson, ranked 101st nationally in the 2018 class by Rivals.com, said he will base his decision on a number of factors.
"Playing right away, knowing my teammates, knowing how they play, how they perform, and academics are most important," he said. "But I want to go have fun and try to get to the next level."
