Defensive back Mitch West commits to Purdue

More: Purdue 2017 commitments

As earning a scholarship offer from Purdue earlier in the week, Illinois defensive back Mitch West has become its fourth verbal commitment for the 2017 class.

The 5-foot-10, 175-pound projected cornerback chose Purdue over several smaller-program offers and interest from Boston College.

"I loved the school," West said Friday afternoon. "I also grew up watching Big Ten football and it's been a dream of mine ever since I was a kid.

"I just knew it was right."

He earned his offer in part by running a sub-4.5 40-yard dash at the North Central College camp Purdue's coaching staff attended earlier this month.

"They said they liked my speed, my recovery speed especially in man coverage, and they were saying that in their defense they need more nickel- and dime-type players," West said earlier this week. "They were saying I'm a hybrid between a safety and corner and that I might be a perfect fit for what they need. That was one of the big reasons that I got the offer, because they think they need more players like me in their defense."
