For the past four seasons Mason Gillis has been a huge contributor to Purdue. He scored 827 points (averaging 6.3 per game) and made 63 starts in four seasons in West Lafayette. With the end of this season he still had a bonus COVID year to use and he elected to use it in the transfer portal.
That made him a highly sought after transfer as a 4-star prospect according to Rivals, and it looks like Duke is going to be the beneficiary.
His departure was not a total shock, as Purdue had recruited like he was going to be gone after the season anyway. Still, it stings to lose a player who was a fan favorite for his grit and hustle. Duke is getting a player that has shot 40% from three in his career, was a member of a team that made the national title game, and a two-time Big Ten champion. He is not going to be THE guy at Duke, but he is going to be a critical piece of the team just like he was at Purdue. He will be a great asset for a teamt hat is already the way-too-early No. 1 team in the country per ESPN.
