Purdue closes its exhibition slate with Matt Painter coaching against a familiar face.
Located in South Carolina, Newberry is a Division II team from the South Atlantic Conference, coached by Dave Davis. Purdue coach Matt Painter was Davis' assistant coach at Barton College in 1994-95.
"Purdue basketball has come a long way in the past eight years and I am impressed as Matt has done it the right way," Davis told the Newberry Observer. "We are extremely grateful for him for giving this young group of guys the opportunity to see what big time college basketball is all about."
After his team's 70-61 win over Montevallo Tuesday night, a game that was tied midway through the second half, Painter said Newberry will give his team a different look, being that it's expected to press and exert full-court defensive pressure.
Newberry's team will reportedly attend the Purdue-Penn State football game prior to the exhibition.
"Saturday's contest is one of the longest trips in Newberry basketball history," the Observer wrote, "and is undoubtedly the most prestigious basketball school the Scarlet and Gray have opposed in the modern era of the sport."

In his first college appearance, freshman point guard Ronnie Johnson was solid, scoring 11 points and handing out six assists to just two turnovers.
Terone Johnson, meanwhile, was outstanding in the first appearance of his junior season, scoring 24 points on 7-of-14 shooting and connection on all but two of his nine attempts from the foul line.
Purdue will want to absolutely clobber Newberry on the boards, as it should given its size differential. No one came away from the Montevallo game satisfied with outrebounding it just 39-35. Starting power forward Donnie Hale collected only one in 20 minutes.
Purdue's exhibition finale is its last chance to play true freshman players before deciding whether or not to redshirt them. It is unlikely any Boilermaker freshmen will redshirt.
Returning players aren't permitted to play in exhibitions and still redshirt, barring injury-related circumstance. Each of Purdue's scholarship returnees played against Montevallo Tuesday night.
Newberry College is located in Newberry College in S.C.
Davis was the head coach at Pfeiffer in 2005 when it visited Mackey Arena for Purdue's first exhibition game under Painter, a 94-80 Boilermaker win. Davis took the Newberry job in 2010.
Pfeiffer led that game by 13 at halftime.
Carl Landry scored 33 points in his first game back from his ACL injury a few weeks before deciding to redshirt to give his knee more time to heal.
Leading scorer Dondray Walker, a 6-foot-5 forward, is back after scoring 16.4 per game as just a true freshman.
Newberry is going to play a wide-open style, pressing on defense and pushing the tempo on offense, giving the Boilermakers a different look from Montevallo's zoning defense.
Just looking at statistics, the Wolves played a chaotic style last year, forcing 20 turnovers per game, but committing an average of 21-and-a-half.
If last season is any indication, Newberry's going to chuck it. The Wolves shot 710 threes last years, averaging more than 25 per game.
According to his bio, Davis' list of former assistant coaches, in addition to Painter, also includes North Carolina assistant coach Rob Moxley, Villanova's Raphael Chillious, and the Boston Celtics' Michael Longabardi.
Freshman James Ashby was a member of New Zealand's championship 3-on-3 team that won the world title in Italy in 2011.
Fellow freshman Mitch Riggs was a member of Australia's 17-and-Under World Championship in 2010.
Newberry does not have a player listed any taller than 6-7 or any heavier than 205 pounds.
Brandon Riley is the team's only senior. He's a 6-1, 175-pound forward, according to Newberry's roster.
Newberry will have six true freshmen playing significant minutes. This will be their first game.
Purdue last lost an exhibition game Nov. 5, 2002, when it fell 83-64 to the Harlem Globetrotters, more like a pro team than an exhibition team. The Boilermakers have won their past 19 exhibition games.
The Boilermakers are 57-5 in exhibition games at home all-time.
Start time for this game was moved back to 8 p.m. to accommodate the 3:30 p.m. kickoff time for the Purdue football against Penn State.
If you are attending the football game, you will be permitted to leave your vehicle where you parked it. If you're only coming to the basketball game, permit parking will be available beginning at halftime of the football game, space permitting.

GoldandBlack.com Prediction: If Newberry does press, it will test Purdue's poise, ball security and organization some, but also generate easy baskets. Newberry is young, too. Purdue's size should overwhelm the Wolves in the halfcourt.
Purdue 79, Newberry 58
