STORYLINES TO WATCH
Boilers off a bye
After playing in eight consecutive weeks to begin the season, Purdue finally gets to enjoy their bye week between Wisconsin and Iowa.
The week of rest is much needed, as many key Boilermakers are either looking to return from injury or are nursing nagging injuries currently. Wide receiver Broc Thompson hasn't suited up since the week two win over Indiana State, but the veteran could return for the matchup with the Hawkeyes. Additionally, Purdue's top two pass catchers, Charlie Jones and Payne Durham, could greatly benefit from a week to heal from the number of snaps they've seen to this point.
Purdue saw corners Cory Trice and Jamari Brown go down with injury during the Wisconsin game, causing more strain on an already-thin secondary. After eight straight games, many Boilermakers will be well-served by having a week off.
No "O" in Iowa?
The offensive woes for the Hawkeyes have been well-documented to this point. The 4-4 Hawkeyes average just 16.3 points per game, scoring in single digits on three occasions this season. Much of the conversation surrounds the family bond between head coach Kirk Ferentz and his son, offensive coordinator Brian Ferentz.
The Hawkeyes program thrives on a strong offensive line and run game, but that's been atypically average for Iowa this season. The result? Quarterback Spencer Petras is asked to do a lot, something he's struggled with.
Big day for a Purdue receiver?
The main trend from Purdue's success against Iowa in the past five years? A Boilermaker receiver has erupted for a massive day in each. Anthony Mahoungou shined in 2017's upset in Iowa City, while Terry Wright's three touchdowns led Purdue to victory in 2018. From 2019-2021, David Bell dominated the Hawkeyes, one of the programs he considered out of high school.
Can Purdue keep that trend going? If they do, will it be Charlie Jones? Jones played at Iowa before transferring to Purdue following spring practices.
Brohm on the Hawkeyes
"They have played a very difficult schedule and have played very well at times. They are physical as always and are playing better.
(Charlie Jones and Tyrone Tracy) "I think it isn't as big a deal as you might think. In the world of the transfer portal, it will become commonplace."
"In the last week, they were efficient in the offense. They were able to get the ball on time. They know they have always had great defense and special teams. We know we have to figure out a way to get a lead. I know that every year against Iowa the preparation is extra important, they make you play efficient football."
