To help commemorate the 20-year anniversary of Purdue's magical turnaround 1997 season, GoldandBlack.com's staff will break up the rosters and select the best players to wear a Boilermaker uniform since Coach Joe Tiller's first season on the sidelines.
GoldandBlack.com's 20-year Purdue player draft will have 100 players chosen — two picks each weekday over the next 10 weeks. Boilermakers who were on Purdue rosters between 1997-2017 are eligible for selection. The draft order is Alan Karpick, Stacy Clardie, Kyle Charters and Brian Neubert.
Neubert continues his path to utter domination at No. 40 ...
Draft ticker: No. 1-40
With my offensive line taken care, supply-and-demand considerations now bring us to the secondary, where a healthy Torri Williams is the best safety of the past two years not named Schweight or Pollard, in my opinion.
Williams' career at Purdue was anything but a straight line, injuries (and assorted bits of drama) being inextricably linked to his college career.
But when he was right, he was pretty good, a guy who might be playing in the NFL to this day had it not been for his circumstances in college.
Williams is a tall, rangy safety who played every position in the secondary as a true freshman in the Sun Bowl who grew into a more physical player than you'd have expected him to when he first showed up on campus. I'm perfectly fine with him playing deep or playing around the line of scrimmage for my fake team.
I needed a safety here and am happy to have gotten a very good one.
