GoldandBlack.com's 20-year Purdue player draft: Pick No. 72

To help commemorate the 20-year anniversary of Purdue's magical turnaround 1997 season, GoldandBlack.com's staff will break up the rosters and select the best players to wear a Boilermaker uniform since Coach Joe Tiller's first season on the sidelines.

GoldandBlack.com's 20-year Purdue player draft will have 100 players chosen — two picks each weekday over 10 weeks. Boilermakers who were on Purdue rosters between 1997-2017 are eligible for selection. The draft order is Alan Karpick, Stacy Clardie, Kyle Charters and Brian Neubert.

Neubert continues assembling a formidable crew with Pick No. 72.

I wanted speed all over my defense, but power anchoring it in the middle of my defensive line.

Mission accomplished.

Bruce Gaston is a perfect fit to play alongside Mike Neal. That's a formidable pairing for certain, one that should make my fake defensive line and handful for every fake offensive line it faces and occupy enough fake blockers to let Anthony Spencer, Rosevelt Colvin and my draft-best trio of linebackers run around freely.

Remember, we're team-building here, and I think that makes an awful lot of sense.

Gaston gets overlooked among the better defensive tackles Purdue's had come through the program. Maybe blame Kawann Short for that to some extent, but the fact remains, Gaston was pretty good — and his extended stay in NFL circles has underscored that — and he makes a lot of sense for this outstanding team I'm putting together.
