GoldandBlack.com's 20-year Purdue player draft: Pick No. 8

To help commemorate the 20-year anniversary of Purdue's magical turnaround 1997 season, GoldandBlack.com's staff will break up the rosters and select the best players to wear a Boilermaker uniform since Coach Joe Tiller's first season on the sidelines.

GoldandBlack.com's 20-year Purdue player draft will have 100 players chosen — two picks each day over the next 10 weeks. Boilermakers who were on the Purdue roster between 1997-2017 are eligible for selection. The draft order is Alan Karpick, Stacy Clardie, Kyle Charters and Brian Neubert.

I already have Rosevelt Colvin and came into this thing dead set on getting two of the elite defensive ends, figuring that my paper team might have to one day play Alan's paper team and he has Drew Brees and I figure my only hope to beat Drew Brees is to squash Drew Brees.

That would be easier said than done, especially because none of this is, you know, real life. But in Colvin and Spencer I have a great fake starting point to build toward that fake matchup.

Injuries barred Spencer from having the sort of career some of his peers at his position did, but you could make an argument that his 2006 season was the most dominant single season of any of them. He made 93 tackles. And 26-and-a-half of them went for loss. On top of double-digit sacks.

The man was a menace.

I'm putting more thought into this than I should, but I targeted Spencer, because I feel like his power is a strong, pun intended, complement to Colvin's explosiveness, and in Spencer I'm getting what might have been the best run-stopper of all Purdue's elite pass-rushers.

Again, 93 tackles.
