To help commemorate the 20-year anniversary of Purdue's magical turnaround 1997 season, GoldandBlack.com's staff will break up the rosters and select the best players to wear a Boilermaker uniform since Coach Joe Tiller's first season on the sidelines.
GoldandBlack.com's 20-year Purdue player draft will have 100 players chosen — two picks each weekday over 10 weeks. Boilermakers who were on Purdue rosters between 1997-2017 are eligible for selection. The draft order is Alan Karpick, Stacy Clardie, Kyle Charters and Brian Neubert, who's up now.
Draft ticker: Nos. 1-91
Full disclosure: The personal biases come into play here.
Ryan Baker is an all-time favorite, as good and big-hearted a human being as Purdue's ever had come through its program, as conscientious an individual, too. I can't think of a better locker-room example-setter and potential leader for this fake team than him, off the field and on.
I'm not sure anyone played harder or played with more energy and abandon.
I'll be bringing him here off the fake bench, and I love bringing those intangibles into play against offensive guards and centers who've been getting mauled by Mike Neal and Bruce Gaston.
I also reserve the right to use Baker on offense as a goal-line tight end, which Purdue never actually did but could have very easily.
