GoldandBlack.com's Purdue player draft: No. 40 overall

This summer, the Boilermakers are being divided.

Reporters Stacy Clardie and Kyle Charters are going head-to-head in GoldandBlack.com's Purdue player draft, a daily selection in which separate rosters of 25 are being assembled. In late July, we'll decide — based on GoldandBlack.com staff and member feedback — which team would win.

Charters gets the last pick of the week, No. 40 overall.

Good pick by Stacy at No. 39 Thursday, getting safety C.J. Parker and keeping me from taking him at 40.

That was my plan. But with Parker off the board, I'll change directions, because it now seems unlikely that she'd take a fourth safety. I can wait to take the next-best available, most likely Austin Logan. But we'll see, maybe I'll decide the unknown there is better than the known, which has been our trend lately.

OK, so Pick 40 ...

This has been my hope for about the last 10 days or so, that I'd be able to get David Yancey, then Jess Trussell, increasing the versatility of my offense, especially in its running game. I picked up Yancey at 36 and get Trussell now, giving me the ability to go with a heavy formation and load up to run against Stacy's — soft? — front seven.

Trussell's still a developing player, obviously, being a redshirt freshman. But there's some upside there, it seems. Mainly, the 6-foot-6, 237-pounder is said to be Purdue's strongest tight end, beating out Cole Herdman and Brycen Hopkins. That's a good starting point.

My offense is coming together, although still needs a center — is that important? — and another outside receiver. But next week, when we start going with two picks per day, I should be able to solidify those spots.
