More ($): Details on Painter's terms
Word broke weeks ago, but Matt Painter's contract extension is now official, the school announced Friday.
Painter has received a three-year extension, pushing the duration of his contract through the 2021-22 season.
“I’m really excited about where we are as a program,” Painter said in a release. “Purdue is a special place with special people, and I’m humbled to be a part of it. There is no place I’d rather be, and I am excited to get the 2016-17 season started.”
Earlier this week, when asked about the extension, outgoing athletic director Morgan Burke said, "He's a great coach. I think he's going to have a great year."
Painter holds a 238-134 record in 11 seasons at Purdue. He's led the Boilermakers to eight NCAA Tournament appearance, been named Big Ten Coach-of-the-Year three times, won a share of one regular season conference title and claimed one Big Ten Tournament title.
According to Meghan Holden of the Journal and Courier, Purdue approved salaries of $3 million in 2019-2020, $3.1 million in 2020-21; and $3.2 million in 2021-22.
The extension happened to be publicly released on the eve of an important recruiting weekend for Purdue, as three official visitors arrive Friday.
But the timing is likely more related to Friday's meeting of the Board of Trustees, which needed to approve the new contract.
The Trustees also ratified the hiring of athletic director Mike Bobinski and a term that would run through July of 2021, per a university release. The Journal and Courier reported a base salary of $600,000, with $200,000 in incentives potential. The university release reported terms "remained to be negotiated."
“I’m excited because we found a director who can help our coaches and staff win division, conference and national championships at the same time we graduate champions in the classroom,” said Board chairman Mike Berghoff in the university release. “These are difficult goals to accomplish simultaneously. But this is Purdue, it is our competitive advantage and something Mike, the coaches and staff are willing to relentlessly pursue.”
