Offered Florida athlete eager to see Purdue

Purdue nabbed its first commitment for 2017 this spring from legacy Griffin Alstott from Tampa.

It would like one of the quarterback's summer teammates to join him.

Earlier this spring, the Boilermaker coaching staff offered offensive athlete Travell Harris of Jesuit High School.

Harris and Alstott are 7-on-7 teammates for Team Tampa.

Alstott, Harris said, has talked up the school he's committed to.

"I heard it's a great atmosphere and it's one of the best engineering schools and that's something I might want to major in," Harris said. "I like Purdue. I want to take a visit there to see for myself, but the things I've been told, I'm impressed by it."

In the 5-foot-9, 180-pounder who claims 4.4-level speed, Purdue sees a versatile player it might be able to use in a variety of different ways.

Harris has played almost every skill position for Jesuit.

"(Purdue) said they like my film," Harris said, "and they think I can play multiple positions but they'd really like to fit me in on the offensive side at slot or running back to use my speed and get me in open space.

"I like the slot. I think once I get the ball in open space, I can really use my ability."

Defense could be an option, though, too, maybe cornerback.

"I'm just an athlete. I think I can do it all," Harris said. "And I don't care where I play. I can play on either side of the ball, I think."

Harris also holds offers from South Florida, Toledo and Marshall.

Western Kentucky, Colorado State and UCF are among others interested.

"I just want to go through the process," Harris said. "I'm humbled and grateful to even be recruited and I think I want to play things out and understand the whole process, understand all the schools and get to know all the coaching staffs. So I'll probably commit closer to signing day. But that's just (the plan) for right now."
