Taking another step toward another outstanding wide receiver class, Purdue added a commitment Saturday from one of the fastest players on the market — Chicagoland's Marcellus Moore.
The Rivals.com three-star prospect and track star from Plainfield North committed to the Boilermakers over offers from offers from Illinois, Michigan, Nebraska and many others, in addition to a new offer from Tennessee. Arkansas and Kentucky were others Moore listed as finalists.
"It was definitely the people, the family atmosphere," Moore said of Purdue. "They were my first Power 5 offer, and showed love from the start. It was a no-brainer for me — great academics and an offense that fits me perfectly. It felt right."
The 5-foot-8, 165-pounder and Illinois' reigning 100-meter champion — he ran a 10.39, but has run as fast as 10.31 in the 100 and 20.88 in the 200 — is projected to play slot receiver at Purdue, and Purdue obviously sold him on the blueprint put in place by his namesake, Rondale Moore, the Boilermakers' All-American.
"They just told me the proof is in the pudding, and to watch how they use Rondale," Marcellus Moore said. "They said it was similar to how they'd use me, and that there wouldn't be many schools that'll pass like them, and there wouldn't be many schools who'd have an All-America freshman playing the same position as me. That was definitely a big selling point for them.
"I could definitely see myself playing similar to him. He's a real exciting player, dynamic, and I think I possess some of the same traits he has. We might be a little different, but we have the exciting speed, and should be fun to watch."
Marcellus Moore joins Texas' Collin Sullivan as those committed to Purdue in its follow-up class to last season's outstanding crop of wide receiver signees, but the Boilermaker coaching staff isn't finished at the position, as four-star prospect Maliq Carr remains a target, too.
Moore has indicated he expects to graduate high school in December and enroll in college in January.
