Purdue freshman lineman opts to end football career

A 290-pound offensive lineman won't enroll at Purdue in the summer as expected.

Louisville three-star product Charles Allen, who committed in June over Miami University, is no longer playing football.

Allen said in a text message the decision had nothing to do with Purdue's program.

"I've lost a lot of love for the game, and I have no passion for it," Allen said in a text. "I have many personal issues that I have to deal with and the busy life of a college athlete is not what I need right now."

The decision likely was a surprise to Purdue's coaching staff: Allen tagged head coach Jeff Brohm and co-offensive coordinator Brian Brohm in a tweet Wednesday morning. In the tweet, Allen said Purdue is "hands down one of the best programs in the nation." He tweeted he was "extremely sorry" for the change.

Allen said in a text he still plans to attend college, but he's still determining where that'll be.

Purdue has three other offensive linemen in the class, Will Bramel, Jimmy McKenna and Eric Miller.
