Purdue's early contact paid off in the long run with new D-line commit

More: Purdue commitments

Purdue landed its eighth commitment and another from a first-list target Friday, when Massillon (Ohio) Washington defensive tackle Malcolm Robinson announced for the Boilermakers.

The 6-foot-2, 260-pound Rivals.com three-star prospect chose Purdue over Boston College and UCF, he said. Other early offers came from West Virginia, Virginia, Maryland and others.

"It's been a long, long recruiting process," Robinson said. "I've been looking into every school inside-out. I've put in prayers, time sitting down with my family and coaches talking about it. I want to be a Boilermaker. I like the program and I really want to play in the Big Ten.

"When I got to high school, when I was a freshman, my first (recruiting) letter, it came from Purdue. Something about that hit me. ... When it's your first, that sticks with you."

Robinson hasn't been to West Lafayette since a group visit for a game his sophomore year, but will return Thursday to take a more comprehensive look around.

Purdue pegged Robinson early in the process as one of its top interior D-line targets.

"As a defensive tackle, they really like the way I use my hands," Robinson said. "I'm very violent with my hands at the point of attack and I can shed offensive linemen and make plays that need to be made.

"I think Purdue just likes the way I work in the trenches. I know there's like a thousand things I need to work on and a thousand things they can make me better at, but they said that they like the way I use my hands for a high school football player. That's something I was coached to do by our high school football coaches. They taught me how to do it and being in the weight room as much as I've been and being as strong as I am, it just came naturally to me."

Robinson joins defensive end Tijaun Mason as Purdue's defensive line commitments for the Class of 2017 to this point.
