Linebacker Andy Chelf was shot in the torso early Sunday morning, WLFI reported.

West Lafayette police were called to a home in the 200 block of Wiggins Street around 3 a.m. Sunday, WLFI reported. When officers arrived, they found Chelf with a gunshot wound, and he was taken to an area hospital, WLFI reported.

Purdue released a statement late afternoon on Monday saying Chelf is "on the road to recovery." The statement said a number of Purdue players and coaches spent Sunday at the hospital.

On Sunday afternoon, Chelf tweeted, "Blessed to see another day ... don't take things for granted."

Chelf came to Purdue as a safety but was moved to linebacker this spring. He'd moved up to the second-team unit over the last week of practices and had a productive spring game Saturday with a team-high seven tackles.

Purdue's statement said, "We certainly will do whatever we can to assist the West Lafayette Police Department in its investigation of the incident.”
