PDF: Purdue-Ohio box score

This was different.

So very, very different.

For all the talk of Purdue's new beginning under its new coaching staff, the Boilermakers legitimized it all Friday night, starring under the lights in a 44-21 win over Ohio.

David Blough was 11-of-13 passing for 235 yards and three scores after entering the game in the second quarter — Elijah Sindelar was sharp in the first, but victimized by drops — while Tario Fuller totaled 142 of Purdue's 200-plus rushing yards as the turnover-free Boilermakers dominated their MAC visitor.

Brycen Hopkins, Cole Herdman, Jackson Anthrop and Anthony Mahoungou all caught touchdowns as Purdue roared past 500 yards of total offense.

HOW THEY SCORED

Purdue 3, Ohio 0, 12:42 quarter — Purdue dominated on the ground early starting with four handoffs, including a 36-yard run by Tario Fuller to put itself in prime scoring position. AnthonyMahoungou dropped a first down inside the 10 though and Purdue settled for Shane Evans' 36-yard field goal.

Purdue 10, Ohio 0, 4:21 first quarter — After a dominant defensive start Purdue didn't capitalize on becauase of dropped passes, it broke through with a eight-play, 68-yard scoring drive.

Elijah Sindelar hit Gregory Phillips for 22 yards over the middle to set up Sindelar's 17-yard touchdown to tight end Brycen Hopkins.

The scoring drive came after Purdue forced a three-and-out inside the Bobcat 10, only to allow a first down on a bold fake punt, then to force another three-and-out.

Purdue 10, Ohio 7, 27 seconds, first quarter — After Purdue bailed Ohio out of a quick third-and-long with a personal foul — Eddy Wilson's third of the young season — Ohio found some needed traction on offense, hitting a 13-yard run, then 17- and 16-yard completions under new quarterback Nathan Rourke. They scored on a three-yard, third down run.

Purdue 17, Ohio 7 — After Ohio downed a punt at the 3, Purdue went with David Blough, who led a 97-yard scoring drive. Actually, Tario Fuller did. He totaled 40-some yards rushing on the drive, and finished it with a one-yard TD, in eclipsing the hundred-yard mark before a full quarter-and-a-half had been played. But Blough's 38-yard hookup with Brycen Hopkins in Ohio territory was a key play, too.

5:19 — Purdue 24, Ohio 7 — Purdue went for the neck after a defensive stop, running a trick play for a quick score.

From the 38, Blough handed to Knox, who tossed to Jackson Anthrop, who flipped back to Blough, who threw to Cole Herdman all along down the right sideline. A key block from Gregory Phillips inside the 10 helped Herdman finish off the 62-yard score.

51 seconds, second quarter — Purdue 27, Ohio 7 — After the defense forced a fumble at the end of a long run, the offense went 47 yards in six plays, settling for J.D. Dellinger's 22-yard field goal after Brycen Hopkins' 27-yard catch from Blough set the Boilermakers up at the 11.

21 seconds, second quarter — Purdue 34, Ohio 7 — After Ohio hit a short third-down completion after Purdue called a timeout hoping to get the ball back, Markus Bailey forced a fumble and Gelen Robinson recovered.

Seconds later, David Blough, threw deep for Anthony Mahoungou for an easy 31-yard TD.

10: 50, third quarter — Purdue 34, Ohio 14 — Down four touchdowns to open the second half, Ohio breathed some life quickly, driving 75 yards in 10 plays, before scoring on a one-yard, third-down run by Julian Ross.

5:45, third quarter — Purdue 41, Ohio 14 — Purdue answered with a 10-play, 84-yard capped by a five-yard Blough TD to Jackson Anthrop, set up by a 23-yard run by Tario Fuller and a 25-yard Blough-to-Cole Herdman connection.

6:55, fourth quarter — Purdue 44, Ohio 14 — Purdue drove into Ohio territory with the outcome already decided, but fizzled out in the red zone, settling for Spencer Evans' 38-yard field goal.

4:27, fourth quarter — Purdue 44, Ohio 21 — The game was won for Purdue, but Ohio kept playing, rounding out the final margin with a nice 25-yard TD throw from Nathan Rourke to Cameron Odom, capping a seven-play, 84-yard drive.
