Purdue offers East Coast quarterback during visit

It's hoped that new Purdue coach Jeff Brohm's offensive reputation will pay immediate dividends in recruiting, giving the Boilermakers immediate cache with quarterbacks in particular.

In the case of QB Kevin Doyle, it already is.

The 6-foot-4, 210-pound Rivals.com three-star QB from St. John's College High School in Washington, D.C., visited West Lafayette last week along with Next Level Greats 7-on-7 teammates Travon Hill and Iverson Clement.

"I was really interested because of Coach Brohm's offense and their success with it," Doyle said. "They've had incredible success with it and when they were at Western Kentucky, their offense was very dynamic, throwing the ball everywhere. I wanted to make a visit out there and see what they have going on. It's the Cradle of Quarterbacks, so definitely not a bad place to visit if you're a quarterback.

"Coach Brohm had reached out to me and said he'd love for me to visit. I had real interest, so I went out and visited. (Hill and Clement) came with me and we made a big trip of it."

At Purdue - part of a tour that also included stops at Michigan, Michigan State, Cincinnati, Ohio State and Pitt - all three players were offered scholarships. Of the three, Doyle might be most significant, because of the importance the quarterback position carries in any recruiting class. Whichever quarterback Purdue lands for 2018 will be Brohm's first QB commitment at the school.

"He likes my size, being 6-4, 210, and my arm strength and high ball release, and my quick release as well," Doyle said. "But he likes my athleticism too. I'm much more athletic than I think I get credit for.

"Being 6-4, 210, people think, 'Oh, he's purely a pocket passer.' I am, but I can move, I'm agile – I run a 4.7 40 - and once people see my throw live and run around, I think they realize, 'This kid's a pretty good athlete, too.'"

Brohm and his staff were able to sit down with Doyle extensively during the visit.

"We watched some film of Western Kentucky and some plays Coach Brohm likes to run, some dynamic plays," Doyle said. "I really enjoyed that and could definitely see myself playing in that (offense). That was a huge benefit to me, because I could see things sort of live, how they'd plan to use me and how I could fit in."

Doyle holds 15 others offers.

Among them: Boston College, Iowa, Kentucky, Michigan State, Nebraska, Indiana, Ole Miss, Syracuse, Pitt and West Virginia.

Among others interested: Alabama, Florida, LSU, Florida State and Rutgers.

"I'm going to wait 'til spring evaluation is over and wait to see who comes to see me," Doyle said. "Coach Brohm already said he'd come to see me, so that's a given. I want to go see spring practices and see what other schools pick up interest, then I'll play with the cards I'm dealt and hopefully make a decision in the summer, before the season starts."

Doyle said Purdue will remain a serious consideration.

"I really liked them and I'm really considering them," he said. "I'm going to try to get back out for a practice, maybe a spring practice, because I am really interested in them. The offense is really dynamic and Purdue's a great university academically. It has what I'm looking for academically, which is either something in engineering or cyber-security. It really fits the bill for what I'm looking for."
