Applause broke through the Purdue huddle after Thursday's first training camp practice.

It was to congratulate the six captains chosen, by team vote. They are: Ja'Whaun Bentley, Danny Ezechukwu and Da'Wan Hunte on defense and Kirk Barron, David Blough and Greg Phillips on offense.

Bentley's selection makes him a three-time captain, while the other players are captains for the first time. Barron and Blough are juniors. The rest are seniors.

"All six of them are good players but better leaders," Jeff Brohm said after practice. "I think they have to be the ones who continue to push us forward every practice, win, lose or draw, they compete til the end and they display the Purdue attitude we want to toward the game. If they can keep the team jelled together, I think we'll have a chance to improve each week. It's going to be important those guys run the show."

Brohm said it was important to name the captains this early in camp because he wanted players to take the reins early.

"When there's any disagree it, we need to go with what the leaders say," Brohm said of the players' approach.
