Michigan defensive lineman Bryce Austin made his third visit to Purdue this past weekend.

"Each time I've gone down there it's been better and better," Austin said. "I just feel like it's family there, that it's always open arms. The head coach stayed and didn't leave to go back to the college he played for and where his family's from. I've built great relationships with the coaching staff."

And because of it, Austin said, the Boilermakers are his leader at this early juncture of the process.

"They're my No. 1 school right now," he said.

Purdue, Boston College, Washington State, Michigan State and Pittsburgh are some of the other the 6-foot-2, 285-pound Rivals.com three-star prospect hears from most.

"I want to commit around the first week of August," Austin said, "but I'll see what happens before then."

Austin first visited Purdue for the Wisconsin game back in November, then returned for the program's full-scale junior day toward the end of December. This past weekend, he was one of several visitors on campus Saturday.

"They just said that they'd be happy to have me there," Austin said, "and I can back down whenever I want with my family, that they want me back soon."

Austin said he plans to make an official visit to Purdue in the summer.

"I want to be able to play," Austin said of his criteria for an eventual decision. "That's going to be big. And then it's just who I'm most comfortable with."

He's being recruited as an interior defensive lineman.

"I think what they like most about me is my explosiveness and how physical I am, and I think you can tell that I always know where the ball is."
