Purdue rolls past UAE in second World University Games outing

Analysis ($): Purdue-UAE

Behind red-hot three-point shooting, Purdue worried little during a meeting with an overmatched opponent Monday morning at the World University Games, rolling past United Arab Emirates 127-53 in its second pool-play game.

Purdue wasted little time jumping out to a robust lead, leading by 20-plus after the first quarter, thanks to some hot early shooting.

Ryan Cline — starting in place of point guard P.J. Thompson, who rested a bruised thigh suffered against Argentina — scored 20 on 8-of-10 shooting, while freshman Sasha Stefanovic made the most of extended opportunity, scoring 15 on 5-of-7 three-point shooting.

"It's coachspeak, but you really want guys to not play the score and to work on doing what we're supposed to do and carrying out our assignments and getting better from a defensive standpoint," assistant coach Greg Gary said from Taipei. "... It's human nature when the score is what it is to lose your focus and do things you don't normally practice. It was (valuable) for them to have to do those things and stay focused. You're working to get better, not to play the score in a game like that."

Dakota Mathias finished with 15 as well.

Forward Vincent Edwards, continuing his strong play, scored 17 points and grabbed 11 rebounds .

Freshman Nojel Eastern finished with 10 points and nine assists to only one turnover. Taking advantage of ample playing time in a blowout, newcomers Aaron Wheeler and Eden Ewing scored 11 and 10, respectively. Wheeler finished with eight rebounds, too.

"When you can get more than three or four minutes, that helps you," Gary said. "You can now watch more film with them and everybody likes to see themselves on film. They're going to pay attention a little more."

Purdue now gets day off before returning to action against the Czech Republic Wednesday.

Thompson is expected back Wednesday.
