More from Day 1: Depth chart could have considerable movement in camp
Purdue opened its first training camp under Jeff Brohm Thursday under sunny skies — for about an hour.
By 3:50 p.m., the Boilermakers were rushing inside Mollenkopf and avoided getting dumped on by heavy rainfall and thunderstorms to finish practice.
Some quick observations from Day 1:
• Though Brohm said he thinks Wake Forest transfer Josh Okonye is better-suited for nickel, Okoyne spent the bulk of the first day as the team's starting cornerback opposite Da'Wan Hunte.
• After practice, Purdue named its captains, voted on by players. Ja'Whaun Bentley, Danny Ezechukwu and Da'Wan Hunte on defense and Kirk Barron, David Blough and Greg Phillips on offense.
• After the veterans players ended practice, Brohm kept much of younger players and walk-ons on the field for 7-on-7 work. It allowed the freshmen to get into a game-type flow, while the linemen spent time working with position coaches on simple technique things.
• Starting center Kirk Barron left practice early with a hamstring injury, which meant graduate transfer Shane Evans took No. 1 snaps during team work for the second half of practice.
• The No. 1 offensive line was the same to start camp as it was to end the spring.
