More: Analysis of Day 2 ($)
Day 2 of the 2018 training camp was unseasonably cool, perhaps the coolest August practice in recent memory.
But the Boilermakers got in their work, going two-and-a-half hours at Bimel with the temperatures in the low 60s, overcast skies and a steady wind. Following are notes:
• Purdue might have lost reserve safety C.J. Parker to a significant knee injury. Although Brohm didn't have exact details as of Friday evening — it's thought Parker had an MRI earlier — he said it was likely to be severe. Parker was on crutches at practice on Friday, a day after he got tangled with running back D.J. Knox.
• Will Colmery is still with the Purdue program, per Brohm, although not on the active roster. The defensive tackle had brain surgery before the 2016 season, then only participated in practices. He was also practicing in the spring, but has been on the sidelines during camp.
"He’s going to stay here and get his education," Brohm said. "We’ll take care of him; he’ll be part of the program.”
• Purdue has had a couple other guys nicked, including center Kirk Barron. The junior was in shorts and a cut-off sweatshirt Friday, watching, after tweaking his hamstring during walk-through Thursday.
"I guess we walked through it too fast,” Brohm joked. “… He probably could have gone (Friday), but we were being precautionary and giving him some heck for pulling up lame on us this early. He’s a little embarrassed by it, but he’ll be back.
“It’s good for us to get Shane (Evans) and other guys some reps because the center position is so valuable.”
A couple others, Eddy Wilson and Terry Wright, also missed a bit of time on Friday, with Brohm attributing that to cramps.
• Quarterbacks threw five interceptions on Friday, part of a disjointed performance by the passing offense. Two were by starter David Blough, two by Elijah Sindelar and one by Jared Sparks. Safety Jacob Thieneman had two interceptions, while Josh Okonye, Garrett Hudson and Austin Larkin (on a tip by Wilson) accounted for the other three.
• Cornerback Tim Cason has been largely with the third-team defense through two days, after the junior was a starter last season and in the spring.
“We need to make sure he’s here with us,” Brohm said. “I think he’s a capable player and will help us. We just want to make sure he’s all in in every aspect. Hopefully he will do some things, but he does need to take care of his academics.”
