On probably the hottest day of training camp to date — sunny and in the low 80s — Purdue practiced for two-plus hours.

• Jeff Brohm said quarterback David Blough is "getting better." Blough suffered a strained right shoulder in Saturday's scrimmage and has been out.

"I’m going to guess, hopefully, we can shoot for next Monday" for a return, Brohm said. "But I can't predict it. Could be earlier, could be later. But I think he’s progressing and we just want to make sure we don’t rush it too fast.

"We have to make sure we build the muscles around that (shoulder) a little bit stronger, make sure to rehab it and where he’s feeling good. It’s his throwing shoulder. We want to make sure we’re cautious with it."

In Blough's place, Elijah Sindelar continues to get first-team reps, though Brohm said Jared Sparks also has been worked in with the 1s.

• Special teams units are coming together, Brohm said, as coordinator Tony Levine works to identify the core players on each unit. Brohm said he and Levine speak often about the depth chart so Levine has an idea on which players are available to him. Though starters may be on some units, Brohm also is being cautious about which players can have more mileage — and more opportunities to potentially get injured.

"We help give him guys who maybe aren’t in the mix right now, but are one play away and need to get on the field and showcase what they can do," Brohm said. "You’ve got to have a good group of backups who take pride in special teams and want to run, cover and hit and it means something to them. Those are the guys we’re identifying.

"We’ve gotten better at. I think we have a decent core that at least we know now what they can do, and I think they’ll go out there and play hard."

• Brohm said it's been a "good competition" at kicker with returner J.D. Dellinger, walk-on Myles Homan and newcomer Spencer Evans.

"We’re fortunate to have three guys we feel pretty good about," Brohm said. "Spencer probably has the biggest leg, but I think we’ll find a place for all of them, and they’ll all contribute."

• Classes start next week, but Brohm said he's still waiting on word on several players about academic eligibility.

"I’m hopeful for a final decision by Friday on a couple things, but I don’t know that for sure," he said.
