Purdue's Jack Owens — Matt Painter's assistant coach for the past nine seasons, associate head coach for the past six — has been named the new head coach at Miami (Ohio), where he'll be introduced Thursday morning, the school announced.
Owens replaces John Cooper, who was fired after an 11-21 season.
The Indianapolis native came to Purdue from Southern Illinois, where he'd coached with Matt Painter prior to Painter's hiring at his alma mater.
Since, Owens has been part of 209 wins, seven NCAA Tournament appearances, three Sweet 16s and this season's Big Ten regular season title. He's been instrumental recruiting, serving as the lead recruiter on players such as A.J. Hammons, Caleb Swanigan, Carsen Edwards and numerous others.
Owens becomes the fourth former Painter assistant in circulation in the head coaching ranks, joining Cuonzo Martin (Missouri), Paul Lusk (Missouri State) and Rick Ray (Southeast Missouri State).
