Spike Albrecht out 'indefinitely'

Purdue will be without point guard Spike Albrecht "indefinitely," Coach Matt Painter said following his team's 90-56 win over Morehead State Saturday.

The fifth-year senior sat the game out with a back injury sustained against Georgia State, prior to Purdue's trip to Cancun, in a collision with another player. It's believed to be unrelated to Albrecht's long history of hip problems, for which he underwent two surgeries while at Michigan, prior to enrolling in West Lafayette for his final season.

"I think he's going to be out a while," Painter said.

The Boilermaker coach couldn't specify beyond that, but knows that Albrecht will miss Purdue's game this weekend against Arizona State in New York City.

Through the first seven games of the year, Albrecht has averaged 15.1 minutes off the bench

Without Albrecht, freshman Carsen Edwards is thrust into the role of being Purdue's No. 2 point guard. He's been playing a shooting guard role to this point, and even made his first career start against Morehead State.

Though the severity of his injury is not known, Albrecht joins big man Jacquil Taylor - expected to be lost into the winter after undergoing surgery to repair a stress fracture - on Purdue's shelf.

The Boilermakers, then, are left with only eight healthy scholarship players.
