UConn transfer Tyler Coyle headed to Purdue

Tyler Coyle, a safety who led the University of Connecticut in tackles each of the past two seasons, is transferring to Purdue, he announced Friday evening.

The 6-foot-1, 205-pounder from Windsor, Conn., registered 86 tackles this season as a redshirt junior for UConn and 107 the season prior.

Former UConn coach Bob Diaco is now Purdue's defensive coordinator. Diaco's former defensive coordinator in Storrs, Anthony Poindexter, coaches the Boilermakers' safeties.

Coyle's addition comes at a position where the Boilermakers return veterans Simeon Smiley and Brennan Thieneman, as well as sophomore Jalen Graham, though he may be phasing into more of a linebacker role, and redshirt freshman Marvin Grant, whose freshman season was lost to a shoulder injury.

Coyle is Purdue's first graduate-transfer addition to the 2020 roster.

It has been actively pursuing offensive line help, as well as potential additions at linebacker, among other positions.
