It will be a Purdue reunion of sorts in Saturday's semi-final matchup at the FIBA U-19 World Cup. Zach Edey helped Canada to an 81-77 win over Spain while Jaden Ivey and Caleb Furst were part of Team USA's 88-58 quarterfinal win over Senegal.
Ivey, a starter, scored a team-best 12 points, all in the second half, and played just 17 minutes. Ivey also had four assists.Furst came off the bench to contribute four points and two rebounds in 13 minutes.
Edey continued his strong play in the World Cup with another dominating performance of 24 points, 15 rebounds and four blocks in nearly 26 minutes of court time.
Prior to Friday’s game, Canada was previously 0-6 all-time versus Spain in the tournament, dating back to 1991.
After a tight first three quarters, each of which were separated by two points or less, Canada took control of the game in the fourth, outscoring Spain 23-18 to seal the victory. Edey was especially dominant on the offensive boards as he grabbed a staggering eight rebounds, which helped Canada outscore Spain 29-9 on second chance points.
Ivey and Edey have been solid throughout the tournament. Among all players, Edey is sixth in scoring and Ivey is 14th. The scoring efficiency numbers are impressive: Edey is averaging 15.6 points in 22.2 minutes of playing time and Ivey 13.6 points in 16.8 minutes per contest.
