Today, GoldandBlack.com continues a new weekly feature. We're calling it the Weekly Word.

Why? Because it has words, it's posted weekly and we're just that unimaginative. (Actual feedback from Week 1: Definitely like the content, but a new name would be useful.)

Anyway, here are some random thoughts for the week, most of which will be Purdue-related.

Share all your weekly words on our premium message board.

Instant Impact: When Purdue hired Jeff Brohm, the guy it wanted the whole time, it acquired as blue-chip a stock as could have been hoped for in the coaching marketplace.

He'd won big at Western Kentucky, generated hilarious — I can't think of a better adjective at this point, because we've worn them all out — offensive numbers and came with an even temperament that would fit Purdue and the job at hand well. Everything about him seemed to fit.

My question would have been this: How would a guy who's won so much as a coach and player in his career handle hopelessness should hopelessness unfold, as it sometimes does in Year 1 of a situation like this one.

Life experience matters — journeyman NFL days and a stint in the XFL — but as a head coach, Brohm knew nothing but dominance.

How would he have handled scorched earth should he have to set foot upon it.

The best answer: Avoid it altogether.

Done. At least to this point.
