Offensive Line
Bill Legg is in his first year as Purdue’s offensive line coach.
Legg may have his work cut out for him this year, having lost three key starters from last year’s team, but looks forward to the challenge of fielding a group of linemen capable of contributing to a high-tech Boilermaker offense.
Legg comes to Purdue from Marshall, where he served as tight ends coach and recruiting coordinator from 2001-2002. Both years Legg was with Marshall, the Thundering Herd ranked third in the nation in total offense, averaging 505 yards of total offense in 2001 and 495 yards in 2002. The teams combined for a record of 21-4 and won two bowl games.
Previously, Legg coached the interior offensive line at West Virginia, his alma mater, from 1995-2000. In his final year with West Virginia, Legg served as the team’s offensive coordinator. During his six-year stint with West Virginia, the Mountaineers went 39-31 and appeared in four bowl games.
Prior to the West Virginia job, Legg served as offensive line coach at Virginia Military Institute in 1994; offensive line coach at Eastern Illinois from 1989-1993; and offensive coordinator at West Virginia Tech in 1988. While at Eastern Illinois, Legg served with Boilermaker defensive coordinator Brock Spack from 1989-1990.
Legg’s first experience in the coaching profession began as a graduate assistant at West Virginia in 1986 and 1987 as an assistant to tight ends and special teams.
He was a four-year starter at center for West Virginia from 1981-1984, making good as head coach Don Nehlen’s first recruit with the Mountaineers. He played in four bowl games in his career. During his senior season, Legg received the Ira E. Rodgers Award for being the player who has "shown high leadership and academic qualities as well as football performance."
Following a successful college career, Legg was drafted by the Birmingham Stallions of the USFL and followed that with a brief stint with the Washington Redskins in 1985.
Legg is a native of Poca, W.Va. He earned a bachelor’s degree in psychology in 1985 and master’s degree in education in 1987, both from West Virginia. He and his wife, Kelly, have a daughter, Sarah.
