Only years ago, Derrick Barnes and his buddies would watch "big-time" college football in near awe.
At the talent of the athletes, at the speed of the athletes, at the spotlight they were in, at the size of the crowds they played in front of, at the elite-level venues they played in.
Then, seemingly all of a sudden, Barnes became one of those guys.
Last Saturday, he was standing on the sidelines inside Lucas Oil Stadium, watching No. 16 Louisville and its dynamic Heisman Trophy winner at quarterback, soaking up the vibe and primetime atmosphere, flooded by the roar of the crowd.
Barnes didn't even play in that game and still had all the feels, calling the experience “one of the best weekends of my life.”
Imagine what it'll be like Friday — now that Purdue's freshman linebacker is expected to play.
“I’m feeling great,” he said after Tuesday’s practice. “I’m kind of nervous, but it’s a great feeling, getting to come out here and play college football. That’s all I’ve wanted to do my whole life. So the time is here. Just have to go out there and make it my best.”
