To help commemorate the 20-year anniversary of Purdue's magical turnaround 1997 season, GoldandBlack.com's staff will break up the rosters and select the best players to wear a Boilermaker uniform since Coach Joe Tiller's first season on the sidelines.
GoldandBlack.com's 20-year Purdue player draft will have 100 players chosen — two picks each weekday over 10 weeks. Boilermakers who were on Purdue rosters between 1997-2017 are eligible for selection. The draft order is Alan Karpick, Stacy Clardie, Kyle Charters and Brian Neubert.
Clardie nabs a player who can alter the defensive scheme.
Draft ticker: Nos. 1-57
Wasn't quite sure where to go with this pick — could have kept my string of O-linemen going — but with the run on cornerbacks, I wanted to make sure I grabbed a third so I could shift my defense to nickel instead of a 4-3.
I was deciding between Frankie Williams and Brandon King. I like King's physicality and, having played with Pender in real time, it would have been an interesting pairing, being able to slide Ricardo Allen to nickel.
But Williams' playmaking ability (10 career interceptions, 26 PBUs/fourth-most among our options) and swagger won out. He can play nickel or corner on my defense, flip-flopping with Allen.
My secondary now has 47 career picks, well above anyone of my colleague's defenses, which is a good combo with my overwhelming front (even if it's only three guys right now).
