GoldandBlack.com's 20-year Purdue player draft: Pick No. 86

To help commemorate the 20-year anniversary of Purdue's magical turnaround 1997 season, GoldandBlack.com's staff will break up the rosters and select the best players to wear a Boilermaker uniform since Coach Joe Tiller's first season on the sidelines.

GoldandBlack.com's 20-year Purdue player draft will have 100 players chosen — two picks each weekday over 10 weeks. Boilermakers who were on Purdue rosters between 1997-2017 are eligible for selection. The draft order is Alan Karpick, Stacy Clardie, Kyle Charters and Brian Neubert.

Clardie makes it back-to-back backfield picks with No. 86.

Draft ticker: Nos. 1-85

Even though offense hasn't been my priority in the draft, I always figured I'd be able to get a good backfield, regardless of how long I waited. The goal was to get a solid 1-2 punch.

Mission accomplished with this pick.

Jerod Void had 36 rushing touchdowns — thirty-six (because it's more dramatic spelled out) — in his Purdue career, the second-most by a considerable amount in our 20-year running back pool. Kory Sheets' 48 is No. 1 (and Purdue's all-time leader), but the next-highest total was 11 fewer than Void's 36.

And Void put up some nice yardage totals, too, over his career, in which he was a multi-year starter. His best season was in 2003 when he had 952 yards rushing and 13 TDs. He added about 1,300 yards and 13 touchdowns the next two seasons.

Void won't be my starter — that's Ralph Bolden — but I love him as a change-of-pace back to Bolden's quickness, elusiveness and relative speed. I'll take Void to shake up defenders between the tackles, though.
