Jeff Brohm's first commitment comes from Carmel defensive back

More ($): Purdue on the verge of commitments

Purdue has landed a commitment from Carmel High School defensive back Jacob Abrams shortly after offering the in-state prospect a scholarship, Abrams said Monday.

"They'd had their eye on me since last year, but they hadn't really been in contact," Abrams said of Purdue. "Coach (Gerad) Parker had come by the school during the recruiting period last year and let me know they were interested. That kind of put them on my list of schools to maybe be watching for. I was just kind of waiting.

"Coach Brohm obviously just got hired. He came in the school Friday morning and they said they'd be in contact with me. They asked me to give them a call later today. He told me he'd like to offer me a scholarship to their school, so I accepted."

It was a pretty surprising turn of events for a player who was likely headed to the Ivy League's University of Pennsylvania otherwise.

"My coach (John Hebert) gave me (Brohm's) number and told me to call him," Abrams said. "He said they were probably going to offer and I said, 'What? Purdue?!' It was really random, but I was excited."

The 6-foot-1, 190-pound Abrams joins offensive lineman Mark Stickford as Greyhound players committed to the Boilermakers. In addition to Penn, Abrams was offered through the course of the process by Ball State, Illinois State and Cornell.

"When I talked to Coach Brohm, he said that he liked how I presented myself and my coaches had a lot of great things to say about me," Abrams said. "He asked me a couple questions ...and said he liked my answers. He said he felt like I was the kind of guy they want on their team who can help turn their program around."

Abrams was recruited by Purdue as a DB, though Illinois State and Ball State actually recruited him as a linebacker prospect.

"I'm pretty tall corner with a lot of length," Abrams said. "I think I'm pretty good with press coverage. I have good speed so I can cover long balls. I think I'm pretty quick on my feet and can get out of breaks well."
