Lovett hopes summer can be time for changing locker room culture

Director of strength and conditioning Justin Lovett has a good pulse on Purdue’s football roster now, having spent about six months with the group, including winter and spring conditioning. But as the Boilermakers are gearing up to begin summer workouts Monday, Lovett is hoping to see development in more areas than just physical.

“It’s still too coach-y for us,” Lovett said this week. “In the winter and the spring, even as a new team, they don’t know where we’re at, where we’re going, it still was too coach-led and dominant. Coach (Jeff) Brohm’s a guy that he wants guys to lead. It’s their team. They play. So for us, we set the path and we push them along and try to identify some leaders.

"But now, these guys either step up or … You can’t just anoint somebody. It doesn’t work. We’re looking — and we can’t force it — but we’re looking guys to really take over and run the locker room. That’s the next piece of it.”
