Matt Haarms enrolling early at Purdue

Purdue will add one of its Class of 2017 signees in January, GoldandBlack.com has learned: Matt Haarms.

Due to a matter from his background overseas that has already triggered his eligibility clock, the 7-foot-2, 225-pound big man sat out what was to be his senior season at Sunrise Christian Academy in Kansas and will arrive at Purdue in January with true freshman eligibility. He'd be able to play immediately for the Boilermakers, though it's overwhelmingly likely that he will instead use this year as a redshirt.

Haarms, who grew up in Holland and played club basketball in Spain prior to coming to the U.S., will be able to join Purdue's strength program - an important benefit for him - immediately and will be able to practice with the Boilermakers, giving them at least another big man on the practice floor while sophomore Jacquil Taylor continues to recover from early-season surgery.

The early start would seem likely to give Haarms an advantage going into next season, when Purdue could be looking to replace some important frontcourt figures and could need incoming players to help fill that void. In addition to Haarms enrolling early, all of Purdue's signees should benefit from the added summer practices the program will get in advance of it playing in the World University Games.

Haarms joins guard Nojel Eastern, wing Aaron Wheeler and junior college forward Eden Ewing as the four players who've signed with Purdue for 2017 to this point.
