Of all the big men Purdue is recruiting for its crucial 2017 class, few are true centers.

Newly offered Chris Sodom is just that.

The 7-foot-3, 220-pound Nigerian big man from Beaumont Central in Texas is, at the very least, a potential defensive force. He was one of the most prolific shot-blockers on the Under Armour circuit this spring and summer, playing for the Houston Defenders squad that also includes Boilermaker targets Savion Flagg and now Maxwell Evans, a guard who was just offered as well.

"I haven't been playing basketball too long," said Sodom, who's been in the U.S. since 2015. "I'm going to keep working each day and when I do get (to my full potential), I think I'll be much better."

Purdue would like to be the school that benefits from it. It offered Sodom earlier this summer.

"I've watched Purdue games before ... and I know it is a very good basketball school," Sodom said. "But I don't know a lot more about them."

He'll find out soon enough, he thinks.

"I'm going to come over in September for an official visit," Sodom said.

Sodom has already been to TCU and Texas A&M unofficially. Among schools who've offered, he mentioned Purdue and New Mexico for official visits, of which he intends to take all five. Kansas and Florida have been among others who've shown interest.

Purdue coaches have spoken to Sodom over the phone to this point.

"They told me Purdue is the No. 1 school for passing the ball to the bigs and it's a very good school for big men and would be a good place for me to develop as a player," he said.

"They see a lot of potential in me, that I can be a very good player. I hope to do so."
