Purdue landed its third commitment in five days late Friday afternoon when Spencer County (Ky.) athlete Kadin Smith committed to the Boilermakers.
The 6-foot-1, 200-pounder from Louisville was offered on Monday following a strong showing at camp two days prior.
"I think it was probably my 40 time that was most impressive to them," Smith said. "I ran a 4.49. But also my height and length. Not too many DBs can move like that at that size."
That in mind, Smith's commitment falls in line with Purdue's clear emphasis on bigger defensive backs, a clear priority for Jeff Brohm and his staff moving forward.
But Smith said Purdue may use him in a variety of roles.
"They want to use me at free safety," Smith said, "but I think they also want to get the ball in my hands some in other ways, maybe kick returns, punt returns or slot."
As a junior at Spencer County, Smith ran for approximately 1,500 yards and totaled around 2,000 when taking receiving. He made 85 tackles with five interceptions as his team's strong safety.
Smith held offers from UT-Martin and Murray State, but was actively being recruited by Wake Forest, Louisville, Kentucky, Stanford, Vanderbilt and others, he said.
"I know the coaches (at Purdue) are going to treat me well and have a plan for me," Smith said. "I wanted to go ahead and commit as soon as possible."
He joins linebacker Jaylan Alexander and quarterback Jack Plummer as having committed since Monday.
