#8 — SHARON VERSYP'S CANCER BATTLE

First off, any time you make lists like this, meant for entertainment and conversational purposes, there's a balance that comes with weighing what happens on the field or otherwise and the things that matter far more.

Amidst all the notable accomplishments and such that occurred around Purdue in the past year came one that mattered more than any other.

Toward the end of the season, soon after the Big Ten Tournament, it was announced that Boilermaker women's basketball coach was battling the early stages of breast cancer.

Versyp coached in the Big Ten Tournament with all this going on, helping Purdue play its way into the NCAA Tournament with an improbable run in the conference tournament.

In the NCAA Tournament, the Boilermakers took top-seeded Notre Dame to the brink of an upset in South Bend before their season met its end.

She's since undergone treatment and returned to work, with an outlook that would seem positive given the circumstances.
