For Nalin Fox, staying in shape during the pandemic wasn’t a big issue.

“I’m fortunate enough we have some weights in our basement,” he said. “We have a barbell. We can squat and stuff. I’ve been doing that stuff. I’m trying to run every day. Stay in shape. Keep my cardio up and everything. A lot of calistehnics. … “

And of the Class of 2020 offensive lineman needed a spot, he could summon his father.

“Sometimes, I have my dad come down,” said Fox. “We only have 300 pounds.”

The 6-5, 270-pound Fox was one of the last to commit to Purdue’s most recent class of recruits, joining fellow o-linemen Gus Hartwig, Josh Kaltenberger and Jared Bycznski. The Pontiac, Mich., native was committed to Toledo before flipping to the Boilermakers in October.

“They actually started DMing me one day on Twitter when I was in school,” said Fox. “They blew up my phone from like five different people. It was kind of like astonshing, honestly, from like a Big Ten school. I’d never gotten that much attention before. So it was pretty new to me. That caught my attention, definitely. …

“They offered me, I arranged a visit with my dad, went down to the campus and everything. Envisioning myself playing in that big of a stage in front of that many people, the facilities there and the coaching, it’s top-notch.”

How does Fox—who thinks he could one day get up to 315 pounds—describe himself?

“Physically, I might be a little smaller,” he said. “But I’ll definitely make up for it with my athletism. And I always play to the whistle. In high school, I always played until my guy was so far out the play that he couldn’t do anything or was on the ground or on his back. That’s the mentality I play with and that I hope to bring to Purdue.”

And when he hits the field, Fox hopes it’s at tackle.

“I’m not sure right or left yet,” he said. “That’s my preferred position. But it just depends on where I fit in. I think there are a lot more guard spots that are filled already vs. tackle spots. They have a need for tackles right now. That’s where I hope to fit in.”
